StadtFarm is growing: Geographic expansion and retail expansion

Dear Companists,

As the year draws to a close, we are continually busy talking about new locations and entering the retail market at various levels.

 

1. Site discussions throughout Germany

It is so easy to say: We are conducting conversations with partners in cities throughout Germany. What does that really mean? We have visualized all the places where we are now in contact with partners and are planning to set up StadtFarm locations. There are surprising clusters e.g. in Saxony/Saxony-Anhalt, and perhaps surprising white spots in the west of the republic, but overall the interest is spread over the entire area.

When potential location partners contact us, they usually already have an area in mind on which they would like to build. Therefore, we usually try to check very quickly whether this can work at all - or whether the location search should be resumed. The sales channels and contacts that match the location should also already exist so that sales can be guaranteed.

Once the location is reasonably certain, we start multi-tasking with our partners: Financing has to be clarified, as other investors and lenders are usually involved. At the same time, local politicians are to be convinced and the responsible authorities "warned" in order to dispel concerns as early as possible and win local support for the project.

As soon as the financing has been secured, BE Food starts with the concrete project planning, i.e. preparing the building application and founding the joint venture. We answer questions from the authorities during the application review together with the location partner. After obtaining the building permit, the production personnel is recruited so that the employees can be schooled and trained in a running plant already during the construction phase. Once the plant is up and running, it can be run in by the new, qualified team - with supervision, of course.

The entire process usually takes more than a year. That's why we conduct so many talks concurrently: It is difficult to predict where the 3rd or 4th location will be built, whether Regensburg is faster than Munich. The only thing is clear: Many more StadtFarms will be built, initially here in Germany. When we receive enquiries from abroad, our current position is very clear that it is still too early to do so, but we are getting involved in feasibility studies for teams with European involvement in order to slowly prepare the market.

Therefore, we are still happy to have contacts of all kinds so that more and more cities can be added to the map.

 

2. Preparations for retail trade

We have strengthened our team with a partner who knows all about fish in the food retail trade. Andreas Lippmann has built up and managed the organic fish & seafood sector for the German market leader for more than a decade. He now contributes his experience and knowledge for us to save as many learning paths as possible.

Jens, our chef in product development, used to produce for the food retail trade and currently delights the team every week with new creations and ideas that we taste and evaluate. We discuss the color of the smoked fillet (there are different regional preferences!) and marvel at the strong orange after bating with Christmas aromas.

By the end of the year, we will have created a seasonal portfolio that will make our catfish shine in all its versatility - whether for the asparagus season or Halloween. This is how we will inspire customers - first in Berlin, later in every town with a StadtFarm.
